Patrice O’Neal understood white people more than we understand ourselves.

And it kills me to have to write that in past tense.

I’m afraid of who the third would be.

Both Patrice O’Neal and Christopher Hitchens have died within the past month. I know this is an odd pairing, but these were two of the most brilliant thinkers that I had the pleasure of encountering. Patrice for his knowledge of the common world; Hitchens for his knowledge of the complex.

Their insights and passion were honestly some of the most genuine instances of human intellect that I’ve encountered. Of course, I do realize the absurdity of pairing a self-destructive, loud comedian who jokes about “Harassment Day” and a self-destructive, loud author who wrote furiously about the dangers of Islamofascism and the crimes of Henry Kissinger,  but these unusual and passionate rants are some of the most genuine things produced in their respective domains.

In short, I fear for Ron Bennington’s life.

BALE-WATCH

In China on Thursday, Batman himself, Christian Bale, went through a real-life version of a scene from “The Dark Knight” where Batman miraculously escapes from authorities in Hong Kong. CNN reports that “The Dark Knight Rises” star was on his way to Dongshigu Village in eastern China with a crew from CNN to meet with Chen Guangcheng, a blind civil rights activist in the People’s Republic of China who has been there in soft detention since his release from prison in September 2010. When Bale and the CNN crew arrived, he was accosted by four plainclothes officers who chased him out of the village and onto the road.

It’s tragically ironic that one of the last video recordings of Patrice O’Neal is him singing “Going Down Slow” with Warren Haynes.

I never met the guy and never had the opportunity to see him perform live, but this is the one celebrity death that actually hurts. Comedy lost a genius last week that could have eventually risen to rival great minds like Pryor and Carlin.
